I always forget how to disable the “login ready” sound of the drums.<\/p>\n

System >> Administration >> Login Window
\nClick on the Accessibility Tab
\nUncheck the Login screen ready sound box<\/p>\n

OR there’s the login and logoff sounds:<\/p>\n

System >> Preferences >> Sound
\nClick on the Sounds Tab
\nDisable the Login and Logout sounds<\/p>\n

***EDIT***
\nApparently things are a little bit different in 9.10.<\/p>\n

System > Preferences > Start Up Applications
\nDeselect the Gnome Login Sound<\/p>\n

Now you will no longer hear the login noises.<\/p>\n

Open up the terminal
\nsudo -u gdm gconftool-2 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c-set \/desktop\/gnome\/sound\/event_sounds \u00e2\u20ac\u201c-type bool false<\/code><\/p>\n
